About the Centre
The
Bioinformatics Centre of Pondicherry University was established

as Sub-Distributed Information Centre in the year 1991-92 which
was later upgraded to DIC in the year 2004. The Centre is housed
in the Science block II of the Pondicherry University. The
Centre caters to the needs of a large number of scientists
working in various areas of life sciences. The Centre has been
offering one year Advanced Post Graduate Diploma course in
Bioinformatics since 2001. The Centre is having access to 2 Mbps
Internet services through Software Technology Parks of India,
Pondicherry.
About the
Seminar
In the past
years, the data generated in biotechnology and bioinformatics
have been phenomenal. As the volume of data is growing
exponentially, the scientific community is looking towards
patent protection in an attempt to capitalize on their
investments. In addition to protection of gene-related
inventions and drug-screening methods, other rights such as
database rights, confidential information and copyright should
also be made available. For this reason, the IPR issues have
become more important than ever. It is high time that Indian
companies and academia understand the current challenges and
opportunities created through IPR regime in Biotechnology and
Bioinformatics. The proposed seminar aims at creating awareness
on this issue.
